Methodology · v1.0

How unbiasEd collects, verifies and publishes college data.

If you find a number you can't trace back to a source, that's a bug. Tell us — corrections are published in public.

§1

What we publish

unbiasEd publishes metrics we can trace to a named, dated public source. No vibes. No star ratings. Today that covers Engineering and MBA in India — 13 pages live, growing as our pipeline does.

Covered metrics: placement rate, median salary, highest package (where reported), NIRF rank, NAAC grade, total cost of study, historical trends, top recruiters (where filed).

§2

Sources, ranked

Source Type Confidence What we use it for
NIRF Ministry-filed ranking data HIGH Placement rate, median salary, rank, parameters
NAAC Accreditation grade HIGH A / B / C grade with + / ++
AISHE Ministry survey HIGH Fees (aggregate), faculty counts
JoSAA / CSAB Admissions HIGH Cutoffs (centrally-funded only)
College filings Self-reported (brochure, site) MED Top recruiters, highest package
College aggregators Third-party listing (Collegedunia, Shiksha, etc.) MED Cross-reference signal; flagged as unverified
§3

Confidence tiers

HIGH
Government-filed, cross-checked

Data the institution filed under reporting obligation (NIRF, NAAC, AISHE). Audited or cross-referenced against prior years.

MED
Self-reported, flagged

Data the college publishes on its own website, brochure, or placement report. Shown on the page with a MED tag — never silently mixed with HIGH-confidence numbers.

We don't publish LOW-confidence data. If the best we can do is "probably", we leave the field empty.
§4

What we exclude, and why

  • Star ratings. No transparent methodology, no way to cite them.
  • Branch-level placement when not publicly broken out. CSE vs. ECE differences exist, but the data usually doesn't.
  • "Average" package. Skewed by outliers. Median tells a truer story. NIRF agrees.
  • User reviews as data. Unverified and gameable. We'll surface them separately from facts.
§5

Conflict of interest

unbiasEd is funded by Propelld, an education lending company. Propelld does not see or influence our data or editorial decisions. No college, lender, or third party pays for placement on this site. Full disclosure →

§6

The pipeline (how a page gets made)

step 1
Public source
step 2
Extract → JSON
step 3
LLM draft, locked to JSON
step 4
Auto quality gates
step 5
Human review
step 6
Publish with receipts

Gates enforce: every number matches JSON, no branch-level claims, no invented recruiters, schema validates, source chain is intact. A page that fails any gate doesn't publish.

§7

Update cadence

NIRF and NAAC data refresh once a year; college filings update whenever the college publishes. We re-extract and re-review every three months. Each page shows its last-reviewed date.

§8

Challenge our data

Seen a number you can disprove?

Email data@unbiased.college with the source. We publicly log every correction in §9, with what changed and why.
